Natalie DeAngelo lost everything the day her two young sons were killed in a school shooting. Desperate to find relief from her unspeakable loss, she volunteers as a veterinarian on an elephant sanctuary in Thailand, but soon realizes she may be in over her head. Battling the memories that torment her day and night, Natalie must find a way to heal an angry, injured elephant named Sophie. Through love, acceptance, and gentle care, Natalie and Sophie heal together, finding new ways to enjoy life again.
I absolutely love this beautiful book. An emotional, colorful, well-balanced journey from grief to hope, a road best traveled at the mercy of nature, which Langley deftly conjures within the green-jungle magic of Thailand. Sophie is an amazing character, an elephant of both challenge and courage. I couldn’t put it down.

WHAT READER ARE SAYING

"Analyzing the Prescotts" takes the reader on an emotional journey as we follow a family imploding. Dawn Reno Langley artfully explores gender identity and, through her storytelling, shows us our heart is what matterthat most. With a twist at the end I did not see coming, Langley offers a glimpse into what the best of humanity can be.

I read this book and didn’t want to put it down. It skillfully follows the psychoanalysis of a fractured family dealing with a shocking revelation. Written in the therapist’s point of view, it is fascinating to read. I hope there is a sequel.

Each of the characters in The Mourning Parade captures the heart, especially the ellies. A beautifully powerful story about love, loss, and the bonds of motherhood.

Why I Wrote This Book

Veterinarian Natalie DeAngelo lost everything the day her two young sons were killed in a school shooting. Battling the memories that torment her day and night, Natalie must find a way to heal an angry, injured elephant named Sophie. Through love, acceptance, and gentle care, Natalie and Sophie heal together, finding new ways to enjoy life again.

I wrote The Mourning Parade as an homage to my mother, who was a great elephant lover, and because school shootings are far too prevalent in our culture. As a novelist, I feel that we can speak to the populace through the art of fiction, showing the very human response to the terrors we often must endure. I had visited an elephant sanctuary when on vacation in Thailand, meeting dozens of formerly-abused elephants, and I knew then that the gentle creatures often mirrored human responses to terror. One of those elephants became Sophie, the elephant I consider one of the antagonists in this moving story.
