The heart-wrenching tale of a family in crisis and the therapist who makes the tough decision to save herself. Every member of the Prescott family struggles with identity issues when the father, Hailey Prescott, leaves the family to live life as a woman, sending them all tumbling into emotions so violent they threaten to tear the family fabric to shreds. When Dr. Cotton Barnes, a happily married psychologist from Raleigh, North Carolina, signs on to treat the family, she is challenged to the edges of her own fragile boundaries as cracks in the veneer of the Prescotts’ lives become craters.
“An emotionally compelling novel that takes the reader deep into the psyches of a family that has fallen apart and the therapist who is trying to heal them even as she struggles with her own psychological demons.”

WHAT READER ARE SAYING

"Analyzing the Prescotts" takes the reader on an emotional journey as we follow a family imploding. Dawn Reno Langley artfully explores gender identity and, through her storytelling, shows us our heart is what matterthat most. With a twist at the end I did not see coming, Langley offers a glimpse into what the best of humanity can be.

I read this book and didn’t want to put it down. It skillfully follows the psychoanalysis of a fractured family dealing with a shocking revelation. Written in the therapist’s point of view, it is fascinating to read. I hope there is a sequel.

Each of the characters in The Mourning Parade captures the heart, especially the ellies. A beautifully powerful story about love, loss, and the bonds of motherhood.

Dr. Natalie DeAngelo, a North Carolina Veterinarian, is still suffering from PTSD after a year of therapy trying to deal with the loss of both of her young sons in a school shooting.

Why I Wrote This Book

Dawn Reno Langley · Author, Fulbright Scholar, TEDx Speaker

When the Hayden Prescott, the patriarch of the Prescott family, comes out as transgender, his wife and three children instantly go into trauma. Cotton Barnes, the family psychiatrist, is tasked with caring for each member of the fractured family, and as she conducts their therapy, she questions her own life choices.

I wrote Analyzing the Prescotts as part of my PhD thesis, using the fictional format to explore gender issues and the impact of one family member’s decision on those around them. I also considered how mental health therapists might find themselves entwined with their patients’ lives, though they struggle to maintain some distance.
